Studies in Jewish Philosophy are an integral part of the curriculum at the Tamar Network for Education and Leadership. We see it as our prerogative to meaningfully connect our students to their Jewish identity with a deep understanding of their Judaism and the Torah. Our learning approach welcomes reflection, thoughts, and exploration from our students. Students are encouraged to be inquisitive, challenge, share ideas, and ask questions.

The curriculum includes the works of Jewish philosophers over the centuries such as those that compiled Ethics of Our Fathers (200 BCE-200 CE Israel), the Rabbenu Bahya (Rabbi Bahya ben Joseph ibn Paqudaeinu, 11th century Spain), the Rambam (Rabbenu Moshe ben Maimon, 12th century Spain), the Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, 18th century Italy), the Nefesh Hachaim (Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, 18th-19th century Belarus), the Michtav MiEliyahu (Rabbi Eliyahu Dessler, 20th century England), and the author of “With Truth And With Love” (Rabbi Yaakov Greenwald 20-21st century USA).

Topics that are central to this curriculum and are taught in depth are:

What is the Jewish meaning of respect and self-respect?

Each person is created with a unique purpose. "Just like people's faces are different from each other, so are their perspectives different from each other" (Talmud Tractate Brachot page 58). Every person has a unique face with distinct features, a unique perspective and world view. So too, each person is created with a unique purpose. They are a significant puzzle piece and without that piece, the world cannot be completed.

Unity: We are all part of one vessel. While each person is a distinct individual, we are all interconnected and united. Though each puzzle piece is distinct and critical, we must always remember the larger puzzle. For the puzzle to be completed, we must work together, offer respect, and collaborate. In order for each of us to bring the best of ourselves, we must respect our unique mission while respecting those of others to help them fulfill their best selves.
